Evelyn Ross Asbury of Lavalette

Evelyn Ross Asbury, 90, of Lavalette, died Feb. 19, at St. Mary’s Medical Center. Funeral services will be conducted at 2:00 p.m. Wednesday, February 23, 2011 at Morris Funeral Home Chapel, Wayne, WV, by Rev. Otis Bowens. Burial will follow at the Asbury Cemetery at East Lynn, WV. She was born March 6, 1920, in East Lynn, a daughter of the late preacher Harvey and Della (Belcher) Ross. Evelyn was a devoted and faithful believer in the Church of God. Although she was most proud of her role as a housewife, mother and grandmother, she also assisted her husband, the late Barney Asbury, in many business and political activities. In addition to her parents and husband, she was also preceded in death by four sisters, Violetta Ross, Magdeline Ross, Letha Blankenship and Gladys “June” Adams; two brothers, Ellis Ross and Basil Ross; and two brothers-in-law, Mose Adams and Opie Mitchell. Survivors include two daughters, Brenda Ward and husband David of Lavalette and Deborah Asbury Freedman and husband, David of Apex, North Carolina; two grandsons, Barney Smith (Stephanie) of Lavalette, Cheyenne Freedman of Apex, NC; three step-grandsons, Chris Ward (Holly) of Jacksonville, FL, Matthew Ward (Candice) of Aida, OH, Richard Ward (Suzanne) of Mayport, FL, two great-grandchildren, Albert Cover and Evan Smith of Lavalette; two step-grandsons, Mason Ward of Aida, OH, and Brody Ward of Mayport, FL; two sisters, Carma Pinson (Curtis) and Bernice Mitchell, both of Huntington; one sister-in-law, Lenore Ross of Huntington; one brother-in-law, Perle Blankenship of East Lynn, WV. She has left behind many nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends. Brenda and Debbie would like to express their heartfelt thanks to their mother’s three caregivers, Betty Watson, Kay Followay, both of Huntington, and Linda McMillion of Wayne, for their love and compassion they have shown over the years. Visitation will be from 6-8 p.m. Tuesday, February 22, 2011 at Morris Funeral Home, Wayne, WV. Her nephews will serve as pallbearers.
