Velma Newman McGhee of Prichard
Velma Newman McGhee, 90 of Prichard, WV passed into the home of her heavenly father on October 11, 2012. She was born October 11, 1922, a daughter of the late Clovis and Della Alley Newman. She was preceded in death by her husband Sam Dock McGhee, sons, Jimmy Claude McGhee, and Thomas Hensley and brothers, Jack and Lowell Newman and a brother-in-law Claude McGhee. She is survived by children, George Hensley of Columbus, OH and daughters, Eileen (Lowell) McComas and Trelma (Arthur) Fuller of Prichard. Velma had 9 grandchildren, Greg Hensley, Allen Hensley, Barbie Hensley Scites, Thomas Hensley, Charlie Hensley, Trelma McComas Davis, Gala McComas Stacy, Jimmy Dock McGhee and Shannon McGhee. She is survived by 6 great grandchildren and brothers, Earl (Pauline) Newman and Bill (Jean) Newman. Velma was a member of the Upper Gragston Missionary Baptist Church of Prichard, WV. She often played the piano and had served in past years as church secretary. Velma retired from AEP barge lines as a cook. She worked the Ohio and Mississippi Rivers cooking for numerous AEP crews. No crew went hungry on Velma’s shift. Her family was blessed by a loving mother, grandmother and friend who provided many Sunday meals, homemade quilts to warm our hearts in the winter and always an ear to listen and a heart to love us. The family wishes to thank care givers who stayed the course and provided love and comfort to Velma. Thank you, Bonnie Accord, Christi Baisden, Eva Maynard, Mary Pinson and Kim Rose and a special thank you to the Hospice Team, especially Dennis, Debbie, Andi, Trish and Tina. The family received friends on Saturday, October 13, 2012 from 5 to 7 p.m. at Rollins Funeral Home in Kenova. Funeral services were conducted at 2 p.m. Sunday, October 14, 2012 at the funeral home with Rev. Scott Byard officiating. Burial followed in the McGhee section of Smith Cemetery off of Black Fork at Prichard, WV.
