Boyd Newman Adkins, Jr. of Wheelersburg, OH formerly of Wayne County
Boyd Newman Adkins, Jr., 90, of Wheelersburg, OH, formerly of Wayne County, WV, went to be with the Lord on Thursday, November 3, 2011 at the Huntington Veterans Affairs Hospital. Funeral services will be conducted at 2:00 p.m. Sunday, November 6, 2011 at Morris Funeral Home Chapel, Wayne, WV, by Pastor Charlie Green. Burial will follow at Dock’s Creek Cemetery, Kenova, WV with Military Graveside Rites conducted by American Legion Post 93 of Kenova. He was born July 8, 1921 in Logan, WV, a son of the late Boyd Newman and Bessie Clark Adkins. Boyd was a retired transport driver for IBC Trucking and was a member of the Philadelphia United Baptist Church at Lavalette, WV and attended Grace Independent Baptist Church of Greenup, KY. He served with the U.S. Air Force during World War II as a 1st Lieutenant with the 368th Fighter Squadron. He flew 69 combat missions in a P-51 Fighter. He was also a member of Wayne Masonic Lodge # 18, AF & AM. Three brothers, Jake, Norman and Jack Adkins also preceded him in death. Survivors include his wife of 60 years, Lucille Williamson Adkins; two daughters, Donna Montavon and husband, Jim of Modesto, CA, and Vanessa Kennon of Nashville, TN; a son, Boyd Adkins, III and wife, Elisa of Wheelersburg, OH; two sisters, Stella Maynard and Jean Maynard and husband, Clevis of Proctorville, OH; a brother, Bill Adkins and wife, Betty of Hurricane, WV; 6 grandchildren, Tiffany Colombo and Jillienne McFadyen, both of Oakdale, CA, James Montavon of Modesto, CA, Broc Adkins of Portsmouth, OH, Boyd Adkins, IV of Texas, and Sloane England of Nashville, TN; and 7 great-grandchildren. Friends may call from 6-8 p.m. Saturday at Morris Funeral Home.
