Bobby Joe Wellman of Lavalette
Bobby Joe Wellman, 82, of Lavalette, WV, passed away early Tuesday morning, November 30, 2010 at St. Mary’s Medical Center, Huntington, WV. Funeral services will be conducted at 11:00 am Friday, December 3, 2010 at Morris Funeral Home Chapel, Wayne, WV, by Rev. Jim Plyburn. Burial will follow at Ridgelawn Memorial Park in Barboursville, WV. He was born December 20, 1927 at Wayne, WV, son of the late Henry and Olive Toney Wellman. Also preceding him in death were three sisters, Bertha Prichard (Belvard), Mona Sansom (Hugh), Dalyah Perry (Murle); two brothers, Arnold Wellman (Dutch) and Keiffer Wellman (Frances.) Survivors include twelve nieces and nephews, Maxine Hurst, Glennalee Fulks, Otalee Reynolds, Jack and Jerry Wellman, Valerie Jo Fuller, Vana Huff, Murle Dena Clabeaux and Mark Wellman. He was assisted throughout his illness by his admiring nieces and nephew, Bonita Clark, Minetta Rice and Keith Wellman. Bobby was a 1945 graduate of Wayne High School where he excelled in football, basketball and baseball. He attended VPI (Virginia Tech) on a football scholarship. He transferred to Marshall College where he was a punter and kicker for the Thundering Herd team which played in the 1947 New Year’s Day Tangerine Bowl in Orlando, FL. He remained a great fan of many sports and was so pleased to be able to attend this year’s MU vs. WVU game with his great-nephew, Andy Clark. Bobby served four years in the U.S. Air Force, mostly Kessler AFB, Biloxi, MS. In 1978 he retired from the Federal Prison System as a senior caseworker after 20 years service in Kentucky, California, Michigan and Minnesota. He was a member of the Masonic Lodge in Sandstone, MN and Scottish Rite in Charleston, WV. He was a former member of the Big Green Club. Bobby had many interests including sports, country music, square dancing, tailgating and exercising at the YMCA. All who knew him realized he possessed a wealth of information on many subjects.
