LOGAN – The Lady Rebels were running.
Tolsia used an effective transition game that took advantage of Sherman miscues and they defeated the Lady Tide 66-51 in Class A Region 4 Section 1 play at Willie Akers Arena in Logan on April 13.
“We came out a little bit flat and had a layoff before the tournament,” said Tolsia coach Ric Morrone. “Coach (Terri Dawn) Williams does a great job at Sherman and they do what they do and that is get to the basket. Our defense relies on ball pressure and getting to the open court. I’m proud of the girls and our effort.”
Tolsia jumped out to a 9-4 advantage at the onset of the game and used ball pressure to force turnovers and ill-advised passing from the Lady Tide that resulted in turnovers and fast-break points for the Lady Rebels.
Selena Browning found the bucket for Tolsia in the first half to the tune of 10 points and Sherman’s hot hand was Caraline Nelson with 13 in the opening frames.
Kylea Pollinger electrified the Lady Rebel bench with three straight 3-point bombs in the second quarter – one from the corner with hands in her face. Kerigan Salmons added another trey for Tolsia.
Tolsia led 40-29 at the break.
“Our girls really grinded it out in the second half and they did what they had to do,” added Morrone. “We’ve been a transition team all year and our schedule was affected early with cancelations from other teams and we took some lumps early and we got the girls to buy into what we’re doing and that is pushing the ball and getting our shooters open.”
The Lady Rebels held Sherman to 12 points in the third and 10 in the final quarter, outscoring them 26-22 in the half to seal the win.
Hailea Skeens led Sherman in the second half with 9 points – including a 3-point bucket and was joined by Lauren Guthrie who also buried a trey for the Lady Tide.
Tolsia was carried by 12 points from Julie Boone after the half as she knocked down back-to-back 12 footers and scored on transition points after turnovers from the Lady Tide near mid-court.
Ball pressure by Tolsia significantly interrupted Sherman’s offensive set, which relies on dribble-drives to the bucket and dishes to open teammates on the baseline.
Tolsia advances to play Tug Valley for the section championship at 7 p.m. Thursday, April 15.
